Our team ensured a meticulous and transparent process to maximize asset value and uphold the trust of stakeholders with the administration of Coys of Kensington. It was undertaken with a focus on preserving the legacy of this esteemed brand in the classic car industry, said Terry Madden, Managing Director of Wyles Hardy & Co.

Overview

Wyles Hardy & Co was engaged to assist with the valuation and marketing of assets for Coys of Kensington, a renowned classic and prestige automobile auction house, following its entry into administration. This involved determining title and managing sales for over 80 classic vehicles, many of which were held on consignment. Additional assets included branding and intellectual property tied to Coys’ esteemed market presence.

Method

Wyles Hardy’s first priority was to determine ownership of approximately 55 off-site vehicles and 25 showroom vehicles, requiring close coordination with the vehicle owners and trust documentation. A comprehensive title verification process, in conjunction with the client and their legal team, was conducted, involving both legal and administrative measures to confirm ownership and resolve any consignment issues. Once title was verified, we supervised the secure collection of vehicles by verified owners. For assets within the showroom, we catalogued vehicles and appraised each based on market demand for classic and prestige cars. Additionally, Wyles Hardy devised a strategic marketing campaign targeting collectors, dealers, and investors for the sale of Coys’ branding and intellectual property. This dual approach balanced vehicle recovery and asset sale while maximising exposure and returns.

Results

  1. Vehicle Title Resolution: Successfully verified and facilitated the return of all consignment vehicles, enabling smooth collection by their respective owners.
  2. Sale of Intellectual Property: The Coys branding and intellectual property were sold to a major collector, adding substantial value to the administration outcome.

Conclusion

The Coys of Kensington case demonstrates Wyles Hardy’s adeptness at handling complex title verifications, especially for high-value, consignment-held assets. Our legal diligence and clear communication with vehicle owners ensured a smooth and transparent process, protecting the interests of consignors and creditors. The targeted marketing strategy, especially for brand and intellectual property assets, broadened interest from collectors and dealers, maximising the sale potential for non-vehicle assets. Combining detailed title management with effective marketing led to both financial recovery and satisfaction among stakeholders. This case highlights Wyles Hardy’s capability to navigate specialised markets and optimise outcomes under challenging conditions.
