The professional opinion process for Renewable Energy required a detailed and objective evaluation of assets within this evolving sector. At Wyles Hardy & Co, we are committed to providing accurate, expert advice to help stakeholders navigate complex markets with confidence. – Mark Edmunds, Director of Wyles Hardy & Co.

Overview
Wyles Hardy & Co was engaged by Iona Capital, a UK renewables-focused fund manager, to appraise a portfolio of five Combined Heat and Power (CHP) renewable energy plants across North Wales and Yorkshire, managed by Cumbria Biogas Ltd. These facilities, including biomass and anaerobic digestion plants, collectively produced nearly 24 MW/hr and utilised diverse feedstocks such as food waste, farm slurry, and wood chips. This valuation aimed to support Iona Capital’s refinancing strategy for these renewable installations.
Method
Wyles Hardy assembled a team of specialist valuers with expertise in CHP and renewable energy assets to conduct an in-depth assessment of each facility. The appraisal included biomass CHP power plants in North Wales and anaerobic digestion plants in Yorkshire, each uniquely configured to process specific feedstocks. We evaluated the operational condition, efficiency, and output potential of each plant, benchmarking them against current renewable energy market standards. The technical inspection involved both onsite evaluations and a thorough review of maintenance records and performance data to determine operational lifespan and productivity. Valuations were also conducted on auxiliary assets, including equipment for feedstock processing and energy distribution, factoring in location and logistical implications for refinancing. The final report provided Iona Capital with clear, market-based asset valuations, facilitating a comprehensive refinancing review.
Results
- North Wales Biomass Plants: Valued based on their wood chip efficiency and local energy demand, aiding in an optimal refinancing structure.
- Yorkshire Anaerobic Digestion Facility: Appraised accurately for its food waste and cooking oil processing capabilities, reflecting its high output value and low feedstock costs.
- Multi-Feedstock Plants: Assessed thoroughly to reflect the varied feedstock inputs like chicken manure and dairy waste, demonstrating their market value for diverse biogas production.
Conclusion
The Cumbria Biogas Ltd. valuation highlighted Wyles Hardy’s expertise in renewable energy asset appraisal, critical for navigating the complexities of CHP technology and feedstock variety. The detailed valuation process provided Iona Capital with accurate, data-backed insights, enabling informed refinancing decisions. Our experience with diverse renewable installations ensured that each plant’s unique operating model was thoroughly evaluated, delivering transparent and robust market valuations. This project reinforced the importance of specialised asset knowledge in renewable energy valuations, especially for clients requiring high-level accuracy for financial structuring. Wyles Hardy’s adaptability and technical rigor in renewable energy have proven invaluable in supporting client goals in the UK’s growing sustainable energy market.
